Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions visitors ask most often before they travel.

Before you go

Can you sleep in a trullo?

Yes: many places in Alberobello are restored trulli, from studios to family houses. In our list of places to stay you can filter for trulli only and message the host directly.

Can you go inside the trulli?

Yes. The Trullo Sovrano is a house museum open to visitors. Many trulli in Rione Monti are shops open to the public, and some have a rooftop terrace with a view over the quarter.

How long do you need?

Half a day covers the town, a full day at a relaxed pace. As a base for the Itria Valley (Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Ostuni, the caves, the coast) allow 3–5 days.

Is there a tourist tax?

Yes. It's charged per person per night, for up to 3 nights; children under 13 are exempt. The amount depends on the type of accommodation, usually €3 to €4 a night: your host will tell you the exact figure and collects it.

Do you need a car?

Not for Alberobello itself: it's all walkable. For the Itria Valley, yes, as public transport between towns is limited.

When is it least crowded?

Early morning and evening, in any season. The quietest months are November and January to March; the busiest are August, late September (patron saints' feast) and December weekends.

Is it good for kids?

Yes, children love the trulli. Rione Monti is uphill and stone-paved: bring a sturdy pushchair or a baby carrier. The Fasano Zoosafari is about half an hour away.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, many places accept pets: in our list you can filter for pet-friendly stays. In summer always carry water: the stone gets very hot.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

Partly. The main square and high street are flat; Rione Monti is uphill and paved with uneven stone, so it's hard going. There are disabled parking spaces at Largo Martellotta.

Is tap water safe to drink?

Yes, the public water supply is safe to drink. Many people prefer bottled water just for the taste.
